If you live in the area, I do hope you'll stop by and see all the lovely handmade items and meet the 16 artists who worked so hard getting ready for the bid day. Treat your Mom to something special -- Mother's Day is right around the corner.
Well, it's been a busy few weeks and this coming week will be the final push to get ready for the show in Austin on May 5th. I've prepared a number of colorful and soft fiber batts for spinning, made quite a few "Wish & A Prayer" flags, various bookmarks, and have yet to assemble 3-4 bags and tissue covers, but it's all coming together! There will even be a few little surprise items, which are brand new.

April 14-18. The birdhouse took the better part of the evening to weave. Tapestry is a slow weave -- a very slow weave. As I progress through April, I notice I've become a little more adventurous and daring in my weaving -- a little more experimental with blending colors. It's becoming more like painting on some level. April 1-13, 2012 April 1-13. Tried soumak numbers for the 12th, since I was too involved with the new Megado to stop and weave. By the time, I realized it, it was very late at night. This is much easier than weaving the numbers like I have so far. Had to fudge a little on the bottom right end of the "2", but that's okay. I think I can fix it later. "Sophie" Sophie arrived in Texas on Monday, April 9, 2012, along with her bench. I assembled the bench Monday evening and spent most of Tuesday assembling the new loom. Almost finished it, but had a couple of friends coming Thursday to help complete the task. Downloaded driver, got her warped and started weaving late yesterday afternoon. So far, so good! Everything seems to be functioning as it's supposed to. The computer part is easy. I'm using WeaveIt Pro 6 on a Win 7 PC, and I find it very simple. My biggest challenge is learning to warp back to front and getting comfortable with that process. There's also a little bit of anxiety regarding completing the pick before the solenoids disengage. Thirty seconds should be ample time, however. I have already completed one simple, plain weave mug rug, using only 4 of the 16 harnesses, straight draw. This is what I'm calling my "getting to know you" project. Sophie arrived in San Marcos, Texas, today at about 5:15pm, after a very long trip which started in Holland on a ship headed for Canada. All seven boxes rest in the studio, waiting to be brought to life! Now the fun (?) begins -- assembly and learning how to weave on her. I have spent the last couple of days moving looms around, cleaning up and cleaning out, trying to make available a suitable space. I believe I have succeeded, and so now to celebrate with a nice glass of vino verde.
April 6, 2012. The Four Directions are finally finished. :-) It only took me a year to complete the task! My weaving garden is enclosed by a stock fence which curves around the garden between cedar posts and one day while I was out there, I got the idea to start weaving in the squares. I really like the way the morning light shines through the East square. Now that the directions are finished, I'll weave some of the other squares, in random spots.
April 3, 2012. First run of "Wish & a Prayer" flags completed for upcoming show. These are intended to be hung outdoors, but could of course be hung indoors. Over time, as the flags deteriorate with the elements, the wind and birds will carry off bits and pieces and spread the wishes and prayers for peace around the world. I think it's a lovely thought, inspired by the Tibetan prayer flags. I'm going to have to make some for my yard as well! These will be offered for sale individually or at a special price for a group of three. |
